Skilled Independent Visa (SI189)
The Skilled Independent Subclass 189 visa is a permanent residency option that allows applicants to secure their Australian residency solely based on their individual qualifications and merits.
This visa operates on a points-based system, meaning you need to achieve a minimum score of 65 points to become eligible for an invitation from the Department of Home Affairs.
However, it’s important to note that because of the competitive nature of this visa category, attaining 65 points does not guarantee you an invitation from the Department.
In contrast to the Skilled Nominated Subclass 190 visa, there is no requirement for nomination either by a state or a family member.
To initiate the application process for a Skilled Independent Subclass 189 visa, you must submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through the Department’s SkillSelect system. Subsequently, you must wait for an invitation before you can proceed with your visa application. The Department automatically invites the highest-scoring candidates from their pool. If you receive an invitation, you will have a 60-day window to lodge your skilled Independent visa application.
To be eligible for a Subclass 189 visa you must also:
- Be between the ages of 18-44 years old
- Achieve a positive skills assessment in an occupation on the relevant occupation list
- Have at least Competent English or higher
- Meet the health and character requirements
