Parent Visas

Are you looking pathways to help your parents in their quest join you, or remain to in Australia on a permanent basis?

To be eligible for a permanent parent visa under any category, applicants need to meet the family balance test and be sponsored by an Australian citizen, Permanent resident or eligible New Zealand child amongst other criteria.

There are six visa subclasses in the Parent category for your consideration:

Offshore categories:

  • Parent (AX103)
  • Contributory Parent (Temporary) (UT173)
  • Contributory Parent (Migrant) (CA143)

Onshore categories – Meet Age criteria

To be eligible to make an application whilst your parents are in Australia, they need to be at least Australian Pension age

  • Aged Parent (residence) (BP804)
  • Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) (UT884)
  • Contributory Aged Parent (Residence) (DG864)

Contributory parent streams

Contributory Parent Visas assures faster processing than the standard parent streams, though at a higher cost

Parents can apply directly for the permanent visa (143/864), or can choose the a two-stage process.
Under the two-stage process, applicants initially apply for a temporary Contributory Parent (173/864) visa which are valid for two years, during which time they will need to apply for the corresponding permanent visa subclass.

Processing timeframes

It’s important to understand that all parent visa subclasses are subject to a cap, which places a limit on the number of Parent visas that can be granted each year. Consequently, processing Parent visas often involves extensive waiting periods due to this restriction.
